Field to Fork Freshness

Tuesday, April 24th, 2018

Here at The Hollies Farm Shop we always strive to find the best quality produce and love it when it is in season and we can source it locally; proper field to fork freshness!

Native to Europe, asparagus is a great source of fibre and is rich in vitamins A, B, C and K as well as folic acid. May is National Asparagus Month and we think local British asparagus is the best tasting! Throughout April we eagerly followed progress updates from Claremont Farm on their asparagus. Due to the harsh and frosty winter (and spring!), the harvest of their amazing Cheshire asparagus has been delayed. When it arrives we will post it on our Social Media accounts! As soon as it is harvested, we will have daily deliveries of their delicious fresh local asparagus at both Little Budworth and Lower Stretton. The environment and soil at the family-run farm in Bebington on the Wirral make for ideal growing conditions and it is simply the best!

A few weeks into May will (hopefully!) bring the first harvest of Edward Horton’s Cheshire new potatoes from his fields in Little Leigh; half way between our Little Budworth and Lower Stretton Farm Shops. These are harvested daily and delivered to both shops within minutes of being dug out of the ground. The Cheshire’s are fresh, creamy and the skin just washes off them. Try them simply boiled with fresh sprigs of mint and lashings of butter; delicious!

We recommend serving the new Cheshire’s with Claremont Farm’s Cheshire asparagus and The Hollies treacle cured bacon from our Butchery departments for a real taste of Cheshire.
